Investing in education to elevate communities in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia’s dynamic development is expected to propel the region to become the fourth largest economy in the world by 2030. Its people will be at the heart of this growth and transformation.

We have been operating extensively in Southeast Asia for a long time and believe our broad experience and business networks can support greater growth for the region and elevate local communities.

In commemoration of our 120 years of partnerships in Southeast Asia, we launched the Jardine Cycle & Carriage Scholarship in 2019. The scholarship reaffirms our commitment to grow alongside Southeast Asia by unlocking the potential of its rising young talent.

We sponsor the tuition fees of students in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, and hope that these scholars will not only use their education to advance their lives, but also enrich their respective communities.

Through a series of long-term endowments and donations, our support for partner universities will run in perpetuity or for a sustained period of about a decade. This enables JC&C to not only empower young talent but also support the development of leading universities in the region. Our partners are the National University of Singapore (NUS), Universitas Indonesia, University of Malaya, Vietnam National University and Chulalongkorn University.

Over the next decade, at least 60 Southeast Asian undergraduates will be awarded the Jardine Cycle & Carriage scholarships. To provide equal opportunities, the scholarships are made available to students pursuing any field of study. All award recipients are selected based on academic merit, means testing and their commitment to public duties and community involvement.

Nguyen Kieu Chinh, from Vietnam National University is a 20-year-old who put herself through school by working part-time. She shared, “Due to my family situation, I have been working and studying to put myself through university. The Jardine Cycle & Carriage Scholarship has lessened my financial burdens and provided me with more time to study. The scholarship has also inspired and encouraged me to give back to my community. I started teaching and sharing my experiences with children whose families cannot afford school fees”. Other testimonials by our Jardine Cycle & Carriage Scholars can be viewed below:

At JC&C, we are a long-time supporter of education and this is in line with our focus to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Quality Education (SDG4). We are proud to have been supporting higher education for over 30 years and the Jardine Cycle & Carriage Scholarship is our latest initiative.

Other educational initiatives that we have supported include the Jardine Cycle & Carriage Professorship, the longest running professorship at NUS established in 1984, which concurrently offers ongoing support of a chair in business administration. JC&C was also one of the founding donors of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS and the Singapore Management University. By supporting and improving access to quality education, we aim to build stronger and more prosperous communities across Southeast Asia.
