Jardine Cycle & Carriage Group (“JC&C”) fulfils its role as a responsible corporate citizen by contributing to the communities where it operates, encouraging employee volunteerism and supporting a range of programmes in the areas of charity and community, mental health, education, environment and employee welfare.
Foundations under the Astra Group
In Indonesia, Astra’s charitable programmes and activities are implemented through the parent company, its various subsidiaries and foundations.
Astra has helped to improve the quality of life of residents of North Jakarta by creating employment in the Suwargo, Sunter, Warakas and Papanggo districts. Astra also continues to assist in the redevelopment of public schools, prayer houses and community health centres in West Sumatra to replace those destroyed during the earthquakes in 2009 and the Merapi volcano eruption in 2010.
Astra’s Dharma Bhakti Astra Foundation focuses its activities on developing micro, small and medium enterprises (“MSME”) in and around the locations where Astra operates, with some 9,500 MSMEs, mainly sub-contractors and workshops, having benefited in 2010.
In 2010, Astra granted some 1,000 scholarships to students of elementary, middle, and high school levels in North Jakarta. The company also awards scholarships through Toyota Astra Foundation, Astra Bina Ilmu Foundation and Astra Amaliah Foundation to enhance the computer literacy of the community. During the year, Astra also helped to renovate several Early Childhood Education facilities. Through the Astra-Michael D. Ruslim Education Foundation set up in honour of the late Michael Ruslim, Astra’s President Director who had died in early 2010, it lent a helping hand to improve the quality of school facilities in under-developed areas like Gunung Kidul, Leuwiliang-Bogor, Bantul and Lampung.
Charity and Community
JC&C’s “Care for the Community Programme”, originally conceived as a five-year programme in 1997, marked its final year in 2010 after a successful 14-year run of helping voluntary welfare organisations meet their transportation needs. Under this programme, a total of about 40 vehicles were donated to some 34 welfare organisations, including two passenger vans donated to the Singapore Association for Mental Health and the Singapore Anglican Community Services, which are active in helping mentally challenged patients. In Malaysia, Cycle & Carriage Bintang sponsors the “Make Road Safe Campaign”, a national programme aimed at generating greater awareness of road safety.
In Indonesia, Tunas Ridean conducts its charitable activities under the TUNASCare programme which aims to provide medical and educational aid to junior employees and underprivileged members of local communities. In 2010, it contributed financially to relief efforts to help victims of the tsunami in Wasior, Papua, the Merapi volcano eruption and the earthquake in Mentawai, West Sumatra. TUNASCare also made possible the planting of more than 1,500 trees in South Jakarta, in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Tunas Ridean.
In Vietnam, Truong Hai Auto Corporation (“Thaco”) organises regular blood donation by its staff as part of a “Community Helping Hands” initiative, and supports fundraising programmes for the “Day for the Poor” in the Quang Nam, Dong Nai, Gia Lai, Can Tho and Kien Giang provinces.
Mental Health
As part of Jardine Matheson Group’s initiative to make a difference in the area of mental health, JC&C has been supporting the Institute of Mental Health (“IMH”) since 2004 in fundraising events. In 2010, JC&C contributed to the building of IMH’s Life Skills Vocational Centre which aims to equip children and adolescents with skills to re-integrate back to the community. JC&C continues to help young people who are affected by mental illness to be assimilated into society through the Youth Reach Programme run by Singapore Association for Mental Health.
MINDSET, the in-house charity of the Jardine Matheson Group in Hong Kong and mainland China focusing on the mental health sector, was extended to Singapore with the launch of MINDSET Singapore. JC&C is playing an active role in MINDSET Singapore and the Jardine Ambassadors programme which recruits young, talented and energetic volunteers from across the Group to help organise MINDSET’s Singapore activities, fundraising and other events.
Education
At the Singapore Management University, three JC&C scholarships are awarded annually to provide financial aid to outstanding students with excellent academic abilities, strong community involvement and leadership skills. JC&C also provides opportunities for scholarship holders to gain on-the-job working experience through an internship with the Company.
Thaco granted scholarships to 17 students of Danang College of Technology, contributed to the construction of Viet Hoa School and donated writing materials to students in the Can Tho province. Thaco continues to support the scholarship programme “For A Better Future” run by Dong Nai Newspaper to help children from poor families.
Environment
In 2010, JC&C made a contribution to the iconic “Gardens by the Bay” project by the National Parks Board. Situated in downtown Marina Bay area, the gardens form an integral part of the Singapore government’s plan to transform the country to a “City in a Garden” by enhancing the quality of life in the city with greenery and flora.
Employee Welfare
JC&C places great significance on the welfare and development of its staff and has developed the “Workplace Health Programme” to promote mental resilience at the workplace. In 2010, Tunas Ridean conducted a group-wide Coaching and Counselling Training Programme for all its managers and department heads. Thaco provides opportunities for its employees in Quang Nam province to develop their careers through education and knowledge enhancement and invested in a vocational college which offers education and training programmes initially for its employees in Chu Lai.
